Summer Reading, 2009

Summer reading is required for all students attending Tyngsborough High School for the 2009-10 school year.

All students will be tested in their English classes during the first week of school (test dates: Weds., Sept. 2, in all freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior English classes; Thursday, Sept. 3, for junior and senior students scheduled for English during periods 5A or 6A).

Freshmen
The Pearl, by John Steinbeck (novella)
Death Be Not Proud, by John Gunther (biography)

Sophomores
A Separate Peace, by John Knowles (novel)
Lord of the Flies, by William Golding (novel)

Juniors and Seniors
Angela's Ashes, by Frank McCourt (memoir)
All Quiet on the Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque (novel)

Students will also incorporate themes, characters, and events from summer reading into other class work through Term 1 and the rest of the school year. Attention to the reading will therefore impact student's grades beyond the 10% figure for Term 1.

Congratulations to THS Teachers!

Mr. Oliver Accepts Award Mr. Bramson Accepts Award

Congratulations to Mr. William Oliver (Science) and Mr. Irwin Bramson (Math) on being recipients of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy 2009 Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Teacher Award!

And congratulations to Mr. Charles Raras (English) who was chosen by Dmitri K. Koustas, a 2005 THS graduate and class valedictorian, and 2009 graduate of Cornell University, to be recognized at Cornell University's, Merrill Presidential Scholars award ceremony.

The Massachusetts Maritime Academy 2009 Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Teacher Award award is open to high school teachers in all STEM disciplines. Its purpose is to recognize effective, engaging, and innovative Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) teaching in grades K-12. In addition to their chosen field of pedagogical expertise, award recipients must be nominated by a cadet at the Academy. That nomination includes a narrative on the profound influence that the teacher has had on the student's decision to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree at Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

The award was presented to Mr. Oliver and Mr. Bramson at a formal awards dinner held at Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Thursday May 7, 2009.

Each spring semester at Cornell University, approximately 1 percent of the graduating class is named to receive the Merrill Presidential Scholars award by the deans of each of Cornell's seven undergraduate colleges. The scholars, in turn, recognize a high school teacher who most inspired their scholastic development and a Cornell faculty member who most significantly contributed to their college experience. Mr. Raras was invited to campus as guests of the university to participate in two days of events including an award ceremony.
